Welcome to the Taupo Lakebed Website
back in brief

The Lake Taupo dive project is a continuation of the R/V Sonne 135 cruise to the southern Lau Basin, central Havre Trough, and White Island.

It was proposed to dive with the submersible JAGO on postulated submarine hydrothermal vents associated with the Taupo geothermal system, located in an ancient (1800 year-old) vent in Lake Taupo, New Zealand. More specifically, the plan was to sample vent fluids and any associated hydrothermal samples, including rocks, sediments, and mineralised chimneys. Digital video and still cameras were used to document visual images, recording any surface morphological details related to past eruptions.

Personnel from GNS, Kiel University, and The University of Auckland participated in these investigations.

The JAGO was unloaded from the R/V Sonne in Wellington and transported to Taupo by truck. Its first dive was planned for Saturday 17 October.

Still photographs from previous day's dive were placed on this website each day so that you could join us as the bottom of Lake Taupo was seen for the very first time.
