It is difficult to imagine a force so powerful that its effects can be seen on the other side of the world, one which can throw out more than a cubic kilometre of rock from below the ground, or something which can create islands out of the ocean. It sounds like something out of a science fiction movie. Volcanoes have done these things, some in the not too distant past.
If you live in New Zealand you live on land shaped by volcanic forces. If you live in the North Island you live not too far from an active volcano. Taupo is the world's most frequently active caldera volcano. Fortunately for us it hasn't erupted for the last couple of thousand years. Ruapehu and White Island regularly remind us that they are active. The thermal areas of the central North Island are a product of volcanic activity.
