Coal Mining in New Zealand

WHEN COAL BURNS

When coal burns a chemical reaction takes place. In this simple experiment you will find out what gas is produced and what reaction takes place.

You will need:

  • a small piece of coal (a 5cm sliver will do)
  • tweezers
  • bunsen burner
  • test tube & stopper
  • limewater

Aim:

To find out what gas is produced when coal burns.

Method:

    1. Place about 1cm of limewater in a test tube.
    2. Put a stopper over the end of the test tube and shake it up and down.
    3. Hold the sliver of coal with the tweezers and place it in the bunsen burner flame until it glows by itself.
    4. Carefully hold the glowing coal in the test tube. It needs to glow for 10 seconds. If it goes out too quickly relight it and place it in the test tube again.
    5. Remove the ember. Careful. It will still be hot.
    6. Place the stopper over the test tube and shake the limewater up and down.

Results:

What colour was the limewater at the start of the experiment?
What colour was the limewater after you shook it in step 2?
What colour was the limewater after you shook it in step 6?

Conclusions:

    What gas had been produced?

Further Investigations:

What evidence do you have that a chemical change occurred?

Complete the word equation for the reaction:

    carbon + ...................... = ............................

Write the equation using chemical symbols:

    ...................... + ..................... = ...................……
