From basalt volcano to international stadium...

Mount Smart was a basalt volcano in Auckland. The first quarrying of Mount Smart was in 1865. By 1939, when the first picture here was taken, much of the 90 metre high mountain had been removed to provide building materials for the city.

By the 1950s the area had been reduced to a large pit.

In 1963 work started on converting the site into a stadium.

The Mount Smart Stadium was opened in 1967. It has since been redeveloped and renamed Ericsson Stadium. The venue has been the site of numerous national and international events, including the Commonwealth Games. (ECNZ photo)
