Health and Safety Guiding Principles

The members of the New Zealand Minerals Industry Association (NZMIA) recognise that workplace health and safety is a primary concern of the minerals industry and must be given priority status in a company’s operations. To that end the NZMIA adopts the following guiding principles.

The New Zealand Minerals Industry Association:
  • Advocates that members maintain a strong and unwavering commitment to health and safety in the workplace.

  • Is dedicated to helping its members comply fully with all health and safety laws and regulations and to achieve best practice in their health and safety management.

  • Maintains that laws and regulations governing the minerals industry should be based on sound scientific principles to create workplace solutions to health and safety problems.

  • Is committed to making available the industry’s expertise to enhance workplace health and safety.

  • Urges members to establish health and safety programmes (systems) that will develop a knowledgeable workforce capable of recognizing, analysing, avoiding and managing inherent hazards (risks) of the minerals industry’s work environment.

  • Commits to the establishment and enforcement of strong 'fit for work place' policies.

  • Pledges to work toward the prevention of all occupational injuries and illnesses.

  • Endorses and supports the activities of the MinEx Health and Safety Council.
